Sewanee was founded in 1857 It was founded by clergy and lay delegates all from the Episcopal dioceses. This group selected a site in Sewanee which is top of the Cumberland Plateau. Local land owners and the Sewanee Mining Company donated close to 10,000 acres for the school. The planned opening of the school was delayed because of the Civil War. However, the University did open its doors in 1868. Today Sewanee and The University of the South are well know and a huge tourist site. Beautiful homes sit on the brow of the mountain that give a breathtaking view.
